Dimension Setup

Overview: When creating dimensions, there are several options available that control the display and orientation of a dimension. These settings are found on the ribbon bar when a dimension option is selected. The following video will demonstrate some of those options, and how certain specialty dimensions can be created. This is a sound video, so please adjust your volume accordingly.

Dimension Style

The Dimension Style option sets the default style for the dimension. Dimension styles encompass color, text font, text height, line weight, and other characteristics of the dimension. You can change the dimension style be selecting a new style from the pull-down menu. You can select from many industry standard styles. Custom styles can also be created to meet your company's requirements.

Dimensioning Between Tangencies

When dimensioning arcs or circles, Solid Edge usually defaults to the arc enter or end point of an arc or circle. To force a dimension to be placed between tangencies, activate click Dimensioning Between Tangencies. When you select an arc to dimension, pick the arc or circle with the cursor on the outside portion of the arc.

Angular Dimensions

To create angular dimensions, start by creating a single dimension. Once a curve is selected, the Angular Dimension icon becomes available. Click Angular Dimension and the measurement switches from a linear dimension to an angle.

Annotations

If desired, extra annotations can be added to a dimension. This information includes items like appended text, tolerances, and inspection symbols. This information has no effect on the profile, but it can save time when creating a drawing. A better use for annotations is to communicate design intent. For example, placing a tolerance on a dimension would be an indication that the dimension is a critical dimension.
